IJOLTL invites original manuscripts in the fields of language, language teaching, linguistics, and applied linguistics. Although articles are written in English, the IJOLTL welcomes studies dealing with the teaching of languages other than English as well. Research on culture of various perspectives as well as linguistics is also welcome. In addition, IJOLTL also considers papers in the areas of applied linguistics, language testing, pragmatic, sociolinguistics and discourse analysis. Reviews of literature are also acceptable for the IJOLTL. The length of paper should be between 3,500 to 8,000 words as defined in the author’s guidelines.

Abstract

Information related to lectures in a study program must be conveyed clearly and carried out regularly. Even though the information has been delivered routinely and centrally, students sometimes miss the announcement. This condition causes the need for a more effective method of accommodating FAQs (frequently asked questions) so that students can find information related to lectures, proposal exams, thesis exams, and other information related to study programs. This study aims to implement four essential components in the multimodal communication model in conveying information in the English Literature Study Program, Faculty of Letters, Universitas Warmadewa in providing fast and accurate information. This research is field research located in the English Literature Study Program, Faculty of Letters, Universitas Warmadewa. The data sources are documents and policies in the English Literature Study Program. Data were collected from academic guidelines, proposal & thesis guidebooks, academic calendars, curriculum, and other documents that support the educational process at the English Literature Study Program. FAQs were collected through interviews with the Head of the English Literature Study Program. This study shows the use of textual modes organized in categories to connect commands and information in the database.

Abstract

Abstract Though teachers have the noblest profession, they are not exempted from using taboos and euphemisms. They also use a language they prefer to express themselves. This paper investigates the conversational topic preferences, use of taboo words, euphemisms, and cathartic words of teachers. Results of the study revealed that (1) sex is the most preferred topic by male teachers while work-related matters are for females; (2) in terms of topics that should be kept private, both groups dealt with personal lives; (3) both male and female teachers spill offensive words as cathartic expressions to show anger or fright; (4) when provoked, both respondents tend to utter harsh words to inflict insult or hurt on other people; (5) male utter more varied and more degrading expressions while females avoided the more insulting and derogatory cuss word; and (6) friends prove to be the most influential where they learn cuss words followed by media and neighborhood.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out women’s language features that used by female characters in Bridgerton series and how expressions affect in women language. This research used Lakoff’s theory (1975) on women’s language features and Baker’s theory (2001) on semiotic channels. This research was using descriptive qualitative method and used note-taking as a technique to find the data. There were nine out of ten types of women language features used by female characters in Bridgerton Series. From ten women’s language features mentioned by Lakoff (1975), only nine women's language features appeared in Bridgerton series. Based on the research, lexical hedges or filler became the dominant type of women’s language features uttered in this drama, From ten women’s language features mentioned by Lakoff (1975), only nine women's language features appeared in Bridgerton series. They are lexical hedges or fillers (34), tag question (4), rising intonation on declaratives (16), empty adjectives (11), intensifiers (5), hypercorrect grammar (4), super polite forms (7), avoid to use strong or swear words (9), and emphatic stress (7). The lexical hedges or fillers feature is most often used by the female characters in this drama, because they need time to express their feelings so that the conversation keep going.

Abstract

This thesis is titled "An Analysis of Juvenile Delinquency in Lauren Oliver's Vanishing Girls Novel". This thesis analyzed how the delinquency in the main character. The purpose of this thesis is to know and understand how it happened, to look for both types and causes of delinquency described in the novel. The main characters are Dara, they are teenagers who commit naughty acts in this novel, the cause of their mischief is one of them is broken home and lacking affection from their parents. Drunkbehavior is often done by the main character. Overall, men are still almost twice as likely to get drunk as women, which makes it interesting to look more deeply. The theory used to analyze is the Theory according to Jensen and Turner and Helms The research method by which the author collects data from novels and from several sources of articles, books, and journals related with this thesis. The results of this thesis are revealing the truth that broken home and lack of love from parents can cause delinquency on the main character.

Abstract

Globally, languages are disappearing at an unprecedented rate. People who belong to language groups must be aware of the factors that lead to language extinction or endangerment to make effective choices about how to preserve the language's future. This paper discusses the Pangasinan language (the eighth most widely spoken language in the Philippines) and its decline. It gives an outline of the Pangasinan language's current vitality and covers the Philippines' language policy history. It also considers a situation in which globalization may provide unexpected chances for language revitalization. This study seeks to serve as a springboard for future research and aids teachers and other relevant educational personnel in identifying, comprehending, assessing, and implementing appropriate language-endangerment remedies. The authors also provide suggestions for future research based on their findings.

Abstract

Teaching a language has always been difficult for some English teachers in the Philippines, even though there are various methods available. They eventually become confused about which method works best for a lesson because they are only concerned with successful learning for everyone and not with the most effective way of teaching and learning.There may also be a question about what approach they can take to develop effective teaching, particularly in the English language, because misconceptions emerge in situations where teachers are only focused on the generic way of teaching. Even though the eclectic approach has been proven effective and widely used, there are classroom situations where teachers using the approach are still struggling to teach the subject matter. This has something to do with the four macro skills in English. One reason for this is a lack of the main concept, which is always used incorrectly. These difficulties and issues in teaching English have a significant impact on the students' learning interests. As a result, some students may find the subject the most difficult, and the worst-case scenario is that they simply stop learning the language. So it is with the other subjects that use English as a medium of instruction because they cannot understand the language itself.Thus, the goal of this research is to address the issue of using an eclectic approach and dispel misconceptions about effective English language teaching. This article will also serve as a resource for future related studies.

Abstract

The types of translation techniques proposed by prominent figures support the translators to ease the process of converting source text (ST) into target text (TT). Regarding the translation process and product, this study applied Vinay and Darbelnet’s techniques (1958) to examine the translation of a medical text published on July 13 2022 in University of Missouri website. The text discusses the benefits of getting COVID-19 vaccine. The goal of choosing this article is to provide more information about the advantages of COVID-19 vaccine in Indonesian. Thus, the ST that is used in this study is English and the TT in Indonesian. This translation study used descriptive qualitative research that tends on the medical text in form of article as the data of the study. In this study, the translation process of the text involves 7 techniques of Vinay and Darbelnet including literal translation, omission, borrowing, transposition, paraphrase, explication, and modulation. The most used technique in translating the text is literal translation that focuses on the structure or forms of the text and the least used techniques are modulation and explication.
